To help you out, we’ve split our TREATS article up into two parts. For the first instalment, we’re taking you through the cool world of SYDNEY's MONSTER SHAKES AND GELATO EXTRAVAGANZAS.
Taking advantage of this refreshing trend, we’ve collated our favourite chilled treat outlets to help you cool off this summer.
1. Foodcraft Espresso & Bakery – Erskineville
Photo: @foodcraftespresso
Foodcraft certainly shook up the shake scene when they topped a chocolate milkshake with a Nutella filled doughnut, and sent the Internet into frenzy. Now, the original Tella Ball Shake has two delightful siblings… A strawberry milkshake topped with a jam doughnut, and a salted caramel milkshake topped with a Golden Gaytime inspired gooey doughnut. Genius.

3. Daisy’s Milkbar – Petersham

Set in Sydney’s Inner West, Daisy’s Milkbar, with its baby blue exterior, is a fun throwback to your classic 60’s diner, paying homage to retro sweets. The shakes and sundaes are modern takes on nostalgic treats. Spiders (available in different soda flavours), the Jaffa, the Toffee Apple, the Cupcake and the Fairy Bread shake all cast you back to your childhood. For a more mature palate, the Passion Pav, and the Pistachio and Persian Fairy Floss shakes are perfect for a balmy summer afternoon.

5. N2 Extreme Gelato – Chinatown & Newtown
Photo: @n2australia
Who’d have thought sticking sauce filled syringes in ice cream would have become a wild sensation? But hey, it has, and we’re ever thankful for it. N2 is pushing ice cream to the extreme, and with flavours rotating fortnightly; you’ll find anything from Butterscotch Pecan Pie, to Smoreos, to Pash Me Pavlova. And to top off these delicious, experimental flavours, you’ll inject a syringe full of chocolate ganache or warm sauce (either chocolate, salted caramel or matcha.) Plus, you’ll be pleased to know, N2 is now on Uber Eats!

7. Messina
Photo: @gelatomessina
Famous for their ice cream cakes, which, might I add, are so sweet for a summer shindig, Messina’s gelato is likely the most sought out ice cream in Sydney. They have 35 flavours set in stone, including Vanilla (made with fresh jersey milk), a Salted Caramel with white chocolate chips, a Milk Chocolate with chunks of choc peanut butter fudge, and the Bananas Faster with banana & cinnamon gelato and rum caramel. Messina then has 5 specials each week, with past hits including a Lamington flavour and the Montgomery’s Goldmine. For dairy free customers, there is an exciting and utterly delicious range of flavours including a Thai inspired pandan & coconut, a chocolate gelato and a coconut & roasted almond sorbet with chocolate coated almonds. YUM!
