Ryan Tatar May Well Be The Best Surf Photographer In The World
Ryan Tatar may be one of surf culture’s best photographers. Based out California’s San Francisco, Tatar is able to ooze style and serenity within the same roll of film. Born in the USA’s heartland, the Great Lake State’s Michigan, it was during family summer trips where he felt completely inspired by surf culture and the open road so much, it was to become the principle subject matter for his work to date.
Tatar has worked with just about everyone you can imagine. All of the globe’s most prominent labels (Billiabong, The Critical Slide Society, Uniqlo, O’Neill, Rake Surfboards, PacSun, H&M), all the best publications (Surfrider, Surfer’s Path, Desillusion, Blue Magazine) and a whole swag of clients in between. His style and subject seem to resonate through a broad range of different markets.
Further to these accolades, Ryan travels the world organizing his exhibitions. Like his subject, Ryan is constantly moving. He has exhibited throughout his hometown of California, at surf festivals in Brazil and Japan, galleries in New York, music festivals in Australia and as we briefly conversed over email, he is currently in the French coast organizing his new exhibition due for next Summer (Northern Hemisphere Summer).
Shooting with old school vintage cameras on 35mm, 120mm or Polaroid, Ryan Tatar is able to take a situation from 2016 and make it look like it was a shot from surfing’s golden ages. Ryan Tatar is a super talented photographer, we hope to see more of him, and hopefully one day he makes it back to Australia for an exhibition in the not too distant future.
