If you’re celebrating on a private vessel, there are a few things you need to consider. Firstly, the skipper must remain sober. Yellow lit buoys mark a no authorisation traffic zone. Arriving early in the afternoon is preferable to reserve prime anchorage. A 6-knot minimum wash speed limit applies from 3pm on New Year’s Eve until 2am on New Year’s Day. Safety messages will be broadcast on marine radio band 27.88 and VHF channels 17 and 13.

Situated under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and sparkling skyscrapers, the Opera House offers visitors front row seats for the fireworks. There is a reserved area on the steps that operates on a first in best-dressed basis. Although free, guests must register. This vantage point fills up very quickly so it’s recommended getting there early in the day.
