Rare Reflections of Little-Known North-West Australia
'Due West' is a short film by Hayden Griffith, featuring Darcy De Clouett
What do you yearn for?
This captivating insight by 24 year old filmmaker Hayden Griffith chronicles a young family's tradition - a camping odyssey filled with fishing, surfing & camping off the grid in rugged North-West Australia - and the life lessons learned there by their son Darcy.
Finding Meaning in Rugged North-West Australia
Words by Darcy's family
We have made a home for our young family in a small coastal community on the east coast of Australia between the escarpment and the sea. But every few years we pack up our lives for several months to travel to the other side of the country - destination North-West Australia to embrace an ideal.
It's something unique, it’s a connection to a landscape, to relationships, to stripping things back bare to allow for deeper reflection on life.
Our 15 year old son Darcy De Clouett, having only recently embarked on the comp scene of surfing, is born of the water. It is the place where he is at ease, where he finds values and, most importantly, where he shines.
Lessons Learned
Darcy is the embodiment of typical genre of a water boy - reflected in his twisted, salty blond locks and in his sea green eyes as he recounts his knowledge of tides, of waves, of species and habitats of fish.
He is a talented young surfer, diver and fisherman and this trip gives him the opportunity to thrive in this special location. To learn outside of the classroom. To go without the creature comforts modern society has decided we should have and to go beyond the daily monotony.
Above all, it allows him to be free.
On this trip, we were delighted to have talented photographer and videographer, Hayden Griffith, with us to capture the adventure. Offering him the chance to travel with us and record Darcy’s journey, his third trip in his short life to Australia's wild Northwest, and to see this magical place we love so much through his eyes.

FILMMAKER BIO
During April this year I had the privilege to travel to remote WA with Darcy De Clouett, a 15 year old young-gun, where I got to shoot a feature film on Darcy escaping from the high pressures of the comp scene back on the East Coast.
For me, the trip made me respect the true roots, adventure and discovery of the surfing lifestyle and I wanted the edit to represent that. All the waves seen in this film were nameless, only accessible by 4WD and Zodiac and some may not break the same until next time we return...

Hayden is a young, self taught photographer and videographer and student Zoologist raised on the South Coast, spending a lifetime immersed in the wilderness of Australia and abroad.
My focus is on respecting the narrative and story of what I see and to document, through timing and composition, subtle details and perspectives. I love nothing more than filming in remote locations under the challenges of weather, culture and politics from the land, sea and air.
